NEDOCS

The National Emergency Department Overcrowding Score is a standard measure for hospital crowding.

NEDOCS can be used to standardize surge plans for hospitals. Several leading hospitals around the country have already implemented surge plans based on NEDOCS.

FEMA should adopt NEDOCS and use NEDOCS.org as a vehicle to organize all of USA's hospitals in times of regional crises.

  1. AGREED: FEMA should adopt NEDOCS and use NEDOCS.org as a vehicle to organize all of USA's hospitals in times of regional crises.

COMMENT: While FEMA should adopt NEDOCS and use NEDOCS.org as a vehicle to organize all of USA's hospitals in times of regional crises, we need to address the predominate reason those hospitals are

overcrowded on an average basis in the first place.

Yes, that is exactly correct. Hospital overcrowding is an issue of systemic shortcomings in the health care system at large + operational inefficiencies at the hospital setting. NEDOCS helps put an objective measure in place so the crowding can be tracked and reduced at the macro and micro levels.

NEDOCS-based surge plans are already helping hospitals root out causes for operational problems. FEMA should institute some form of a NEDOCS-based surge plan for every hospital. Perhaps in conjunction with Joint Commission.

  3. Other than adopt NEDOCS and use NEDOCS.org , does anyone want to discuss the solution to this problem ?

  4. This might be better addressed by going through CDC using ASPR (Hospital) funds as an incentive or just make it a joint commission requirement.

Great thought, just change the lead organization.
