The Disaster Distress Helpline (a program of SAMHSA administered by Link2Health Solutions, a subsidiary of the not-for-profit Mental Health Association of NYC) encourages EMgrs & others working in disaster response to help educate survivors of disaster, first responders, loved ones of victims and the general public regarding the importance of anticipating emotional needs when disasters and other emergencies strike.
Recommendations to "Plan for Coping"
1) Program the Disaster Distress Helpline (toll-free 1-800-985-5990; text "TalkWithUs" to 66746) into mobile devices for ease of 24/7/365 access when feelings of distress may be triggered before, during or after disasters.
2) Put DDH in your Go-Bag: Download DDH brochure with service information & tips for coping, print & put in individual, family & business go-bags as a reminder for healthy coping during disasters & emergencies. Brochures and other free literature can be found at http://issuu.com/disasterdistresshelpline.
3) Tweet & post to promote the DDH and other local, state, & national disaster crisis services year-round, not just when disasters strike, so that your loved ones are familiar with these resources when they may most need them.
