Tips for Creating a County Wide Group

We have a highly active 400+ member prepper group in Marshall County, Alabama. Started in April 2012.

We seem to have found a good formula for involving and educating our county residents. It starts with a dedicated core group of leaders and uses a "value added" website with a huge preparedness library for members... over 1000 pages.

We also hold free seminar and workshops every 2 to 3 weeks and send out informative Newsletters that we encourage members to share with friends and families to motivate them to join.

We have cultivated contacts with the 4 newspapers in our county and they have printed numerous articles about our group, we also had local TV news coverage recently.

The key to this has been to run our volunteer group like a business and use advertizing and marketing concepts.

For people to use our online library they must first join the group. We ask for minimal contact information -Name - Town - Email Address. We keep in touch with our members through group emails.

We are currently helping groups in three surrounding counties to establish their County Groups.

We are non-political and do not engage in "conspiricy" theorys that put off alot of people. We stress family and neighborhood prepparedness that is reasonable, practical and pragmatic.

The largest challenge is to control your "brand" so as not to be seen as nuts, flakes & survialists with bunker mentalities.

We would like to help others create stable groups in their counties. We are willing to share all our web content with serious groups.

I forgot to mention ... the only expense has been for website hosting and copy paper for our seminar/workshop handouts.... Total expenses this year are about $120. By spreading out tasks to our core leaders. on average each one spends less than two hours per week. Effective and efficient operations are not difficult to establish using our model.

  2. Sounds great ! In terms of 'CAPABILITY' or Emergency Support Function, exactly what does your group or the other groups do ?

    As an answer to above...
Our organization works to get to the lowest level, i.e. families and neighborhoods to create an aggregate worst case capacity for self-reliance and self-sufficiency without reliance on external infrastructure. It is a continual work in progress. We have experts in the fields of medicine, animal husbandry, farming, mechanic, communications, organization, water purification, firearms use, power generation & storage, NBC, and finance areas that provide training to our members. The overarching goal is to create neighborhood "islands" of groups capable of internal mutual aid and support .
As for "other" groups... I have no idea what other groups are doing or not doing.
Hope this answers your question... if not, please restate.

While there are many small groups of "Preppers" nationwide, there are very few who do much outreach county wide. Not aware of any in GA... perhaps a Google Search can turn up some in your area. If none, you and a small group of core leaders can start one using our model. We will provide assistance so you do not have to "re-create the wheel"... this assistance will include providing our entire on-line Prepper Library as well as orgnaizational strategies and techniques. Email me directly if you are interested. marc@marshallpreppers.com

  7. The "Preppers" group sounds as though they have what disaster victims need. Perhaps this is what each county needs here. Set up, and ready prior to a potential disaster.
