Make Choices to Favor Education

Americans are now making choices that seldom favor education. A recent evaluation of youth in 70 nations placed American 15 year olds 14th in reading, 17th in science, 25th in math, and our graduation rates are falling. India has more honors students that we have students. China now has as many students proficient in English as we do. Our failure to educate our youth in finance has helped to create a series of financial crises. Too often we are failing to provide our youth with the skills they will need to get jobs when they graduate.

Too many schools offer less than healthful meals, so obesity and diabetes rates are on the increase. On this site, forum members have asked schools to do more to prepare our youth to deal effectively with future disasters. Yet, we are increasingly unwilling to give schools what they need just for delivery of basic education. We all need to ask ourselves what we need to do to support our schools and our youth. The Feds do not have sufficient resources to provide what we must provide for ourselves. Our collective education is the very foundation of our freedoms. The development of intellect is what gives us the ability to create and select effective leaders to guide us. In recent years, we seem to be suffering the loss of this ability.
